Water in the Hands of the Community

Communities Maintaining Ownership of their Resources

Beginning in 2020, a series of failed rainy seasons across the Horn of Africa caused the worst drought in over 40 years. In Turkana County, Kenya, many families were forced to survive on as little as seven liters of water per week.

After a years-long process, IsraAID proudly handed over three newly drilled boreholes to the host community in Turkana, Kenya - marking the conclusion of a major effort to restore and expand access to safe water.

Throughout the project, we carried out a comprehensive hydraulic survey, repaired 14 existing boreholes, drilled new ones, installed taps and infrastructure, built four centralized kiosks, and trained water user committees. Together with local stakeholders, we identified and drilled at the most promising sites, bringing safe, reliable water to communities that lack access to this basic resource.

In total, 64,000 people regained access to safe drinking water. The final and most important step: returning full ownership of these resources to the community.
