Israel began distributing humanitarian aid in Guatemala on Wednesday after the country's Fuego volcano erupted earlier this week, killing at least 99 people, IsraAID team said in a statement on Thursday.

The eruption of Guatemala's Fuego volcano has impacted at least 1.7 million people, and more than 3,000 people have been evacuated from the area where it erupted.

The National Forensic Sciences Agency said in a report Wednesday that morgues had received the remains of 99 people killed as a result of the eruption.

“Upon arrival on June 5th, IsraAID’s Emergency Response Team began a comprehensive needs assessment to guide the organization’s interventions and started distributing urgent humanitarian relief items in the Departamento of Escuintla, one of the worst hit areas,” a statement from IsraAID read on Thursday."
